The idea of establishing Zappos (derived from Spanish word zapato, meaning shoes), was conceived by Nick Swinmurn (Swinmurn), when he failed to get a pair of Vans in the style, color, and size he was looking for, while shopping at a mall in San Francisco. Initially, he went to shoe stores and sought permission to take pictures of the shoes and display them online. The deal was that if people posted orders online for those shoes, then Swinmurn would buy them from the store at full price. Swinmurn managed to get a few orders but he wanted to make the operation bigger. To raise money for starting the business (called Shoesite.com), he worked as a contractor for Silicon Graphics and also borrowed money from colleagues there.
